What is an enzyme facial?
At Aurora Dermatology we offer DMK Enzyme Therapy as a cornerstone treatment in skin revision. This therapy works with the skin’s natural processes to help support healthy function at a cellular level and aims to improve the appearance and condition of the skin.
How is it different from other facials?
While regular facials often focus on surface-level cleansing and exfoliation, DMK Enzyme Therapy targets deep layers of the skin.
Think of it as an “inside out” facial, removing toxins and rebalancing the skin’s internal functions, rather than an “outside in” approach that relies on applying nutrients to the surface. One of the key benefits is visible reduction in pore size.
As the enzymes help flush out excess oil (sebum), dead skin cells and congestion form pores – the stretched and open appearance may be reduced. At the same time, the treatment helps support healthy circulation, collagen activity and oil regulation – which helps contribute to more refined and clearer skin.
What happens during an enzyme facial?
DMK Enzyme Therapy works in three stages over 45 minutes, with each 15-minute phase supporting skin in a unique way.
Phase 1 (Breakdown)
Enzymes are applied to help support the removal of surface debris and dead skin cells.
Phase 2 (Processing)
Additional enzymes are used to assist in further processing of surface build-up and to support the skin’s natural function.
Phase 3 (Elimination)
This final stage supports the skin’s natural processes, including circulation and surface activity which may help contribute to a refreshed appearance.
What does the enzyme facial feel like?
Remember in decades past how women would put egg whites on their face? And how the face would feel quite tight as the egg white hardened? There is a similar experience with the enzyme facial. Some patients also notice some itching, or a throbbing or tingling feeling – all signs the treatment is working to its potential. Try not to look down during the treatment, so the neck and face muscles remain taut.
What are the benefits of the enzyme facial?
The enzyme facial is non-invasive. This means no needles, no downtime.
The treatment uses a hard-setting enzyme masque that stimulates the skin naturally without damaging the surface. It supports internal skin function through increased circulation, lymphatic drainage and oxygenation.
It is rejuvenating, and helps boost collagen and elastin, detoxify skin cells and improve hydration to firm, tone and refresh dull or stressed skin. It is also restorative, and helps to correct and strengthen skin over time.
This facial is used to address concerns like acne, pigmentation, rosacea, redness and the signs of ageing.
It is also an ideal refresher treatment for a wedding or special occasion – performed two or three days beforehand.
Immediately after treatment
Your skin may appear flushed or slightly red for 30-60 minutes, due to increased blood flow, also known as the plasmatic effect.
This is normal. A feeling of tightness or gentle pulsing is common. This is the result of deep lymphatic drainage and facial muscle stimulation. The skin should feel firm and glowing immediately after your first session.
In the days following, you may experience mild flaking or dryness as skin renews, especially if combined with resurfacing treatments.
